It is located 10 km from the city of Granada. It has around 50 species of mammals, 174 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles and 750 species of flora. The temperature varies between 15 ° C and 23 ° C. It has some endemic flora and fauna species, such as salamanders (Bolitoglossa mombachoensis), orchids (Maxillaria mombachoensis), butterflies (Napeogenes tolossa, mombachoensis). The last eruption of this volcano was in the year 1570 causing an avalanche of the northeast side of the crater and the formation of 365 small volcanic islands, well known as the islets of Lake Nicaragua.
